Film raises awareness of eating disorders

With the much appreciated support of our charity partners, the Trustees Savings Bank, Rosehill Branch, we were able to show the film Seen but not Heard to an audience of group members, carers, volunteers and some of the bank staff. Niamh Allen and our own Katie Bedford, who were involved in the making of the film, gave a short introduction and detailed the developments since the film was made. These include funding to show the film in Lothian schools and following the positive feedback, a film for young people is to be made. The team have also developed leaflets on eating disorders for distribution in GP practices.

The film highlighted a variety of eating disorders, with both male and females featured discussing their experiences and recovery. There was some very clever imagery and time for the audience to think about what they had seen.

The film was very well received by our audience who felt it was very informative and sensitively done. It was followed with a very lively discussion afterwards and refreshments.

Many thanks to Niamh and Katie for giving up their free time to show the film.

New group for Tayside

On Wednesday 21st October, our satellite group NEEDS2 Bridging the Gap held a Launch Night in The Carers’ Centre, Seagate, Dundee. It was very well attended. There were three guest speakers. First, Dr Paula Collin of the Tayside Eating Disorders Service gave an interesting overview of what is available for adults challenged by an eating disorder. Tina McGuff then gave a very emotional talk on how she came to write her book, Seconds to Snap, which is based on her struggling with, and then recovering from anorexia. She is now very focussed on helping others take steps to recover. Finally, Sara Preston, Beat’s Senior Young People’s Project Officer spoke about her own experience recovering and what Beat are currently doing in Scotland. Following refreshments the new group members split into groups of carers and those personally challenged with their own facilitators. The next group meeting will be on Wednesday 11th November from 7-9pm. If you have any queries please contact our administrator via contact form or leave a message on 01224 557672, and she will return your call.

Lucy’s Recovery – An Inspiration video

One of our group members recommended this short video from Beat. It can help support motivation towards recovery. It features lots of positive quotes and is very uplifting.
