Coming-of-Age Ceilidh

Coming of Age Ceilidh

NEEDS(Scotland) held a coming of age ceilidh on April 3rd 2015 at Aberdeen University’s Elphinstone Hall. This celebration was organised by three of our young volunteers, Natasha Vickers, Emma Lindsay and Katie Bedford, and was very well attended.

Our group have now been supporting people struggling with an eating disorder and their friends and families for 21 years in the north-east, beginning in Westhill and Keith and coming together in Aberdeen in 2003.

The girls organised some fundraisers such as a bake sale and a leg waxing session for their partners, as well as a raffle on the night and auction of a gent’s watch and a pearl necklace. Our thanks must go to those who donated gifts or vouchers to the raffle including

Finnies the Jeweller
Just Gems of Cults
Northern Diamond Jeweller
Nova
Ishoka Hair and Beauty

The excellent ceilidh band ensured that the floor was always packed, and a very efficient “caller” ensured that we mastered the moves of each dance. We are very grateful to Aberdeen University Students’ Association’s Raising and Giving Campaign for covering our expenses on this occasion.

Beating the blues

Although not specifically for those affected by eating disorders, this new online course from the NHS may be of help to you if you are feeling depressed or anxious. The course has 8 sessions and is available through your GP. It is easy to use and totally confidential. It is available as a treatment with or without medication and accessible wherever or whenever you choose. It is also recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for the treatment of depression. Visit www.beatingtheblues.co.uk for more information.

Parent/Carer Representation

The Scottish Child and Adolescent Mental Health Eating Disorders Services have recently held their first national conference and created a steering group which will meet three times per year. The purpose of this group is to maintain links between the services, look at current practice, discuss what the services need, and look at recent research.
Two parent/carer representatives have been appointed to the committee. Eva Musby, who is herself a parent/carer and the author of Anorexia and other eating disorders: How to help your child eat well and be well. The other is myself, Heather Cassie, chairperson of NEEDS(Scotland).
Both Eva and I would invite parents/carers to contact us with any issues they wish to raise with the steering group regarding services in their area and any suggestions you may have. You can contact me (Heather) through this website, or alternatively Eva through her webpage www.evamusby.co.uk/steering and we can raise these issues on your behalf. This Steering Group firmly believes that working together is the way forward in the struggle towards recovery.

2015 July SAGE award

UK award for GI collaboration with ED

NHS Grampian’s effective work for patients with eating disorders, which integrated teams in the Gastrointestinal (GI) department, the Eden Eating Disorders (ED) Unit and the outpatient eating disorder services, has scooped 2nd prize in the UK SAGE Awards. Congratulations to everyone involved!

The accolade is for the “Integrated Education Resource for the medical management of severe life-threatening anorexia nervosa” and has been made by SAGE (Shire Awards for Gastrointestinal Excellence) which are designed to allow individual healthcare professionals, units and healthcare networks in gastrointestinal care to be recognised for innovative work, share best practice and raise standards of patient care.

Dr Alastair McKinlay, Consultant Gastroenterologist, attended the awards ceremony in London last month, with Dr Jane Morris Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Lesley Pillans, and Pauline Milne from the Eden Unit, and Marie McKimmie from the outpatient eating disorder service.

Alastair said: “It is a great honour to have national recognition for the collaboration between the Department of Digestive Diseases, Ward 104 ARI and the Eating Disorder Services. The link between the GI services in ARI and the Outpatient, Daycase and inpatient facility in the Eden Unit is one of the most comprehensive in the UK. It has given us a wonderful opportunity to develop truly collaborative working, and we now want to share that experience with other units. The SAGE Award will allow us to develop a project to build a series of educational training resources on Anorexia Nervosa for Scotland and the UK.

“We were one of three projects shortlisted by SHIRE, all of which were of a very high standard, so we are delighted with achieving second place. Above all it recognises the work that the nurses, dietitians, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists and doctors have done over many years to build a truly integrated service in Grampian. It’s the fantastic staff that we have working in ARI and Cornhill that have made this possible, and they are the real winners.”

Scotland’s Beat Young Ambassadors win awards

NEEDS(Scotland) are delighted to announce that two of our volunteer facilitators, Katie Bedford and Emma Lindsey are part of the team of Beat Young Ambassadors in Scotland which was selected to receive an Inspiring Volunteering Achievement Award.

The award will be presented to two representatives by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh at the City Chambers. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday 16th June 2015 at 6.30pm followed by a drinks reception. This award ceremony is organised by Volunteer Centre Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Compact Partnership.

We have our fingers crossed for Katie and Emma to be the chosen representatives, but Sara Preston, Beat’s Young Peoples’ Participation Officer in Scotland, has arranged a celebration social day for all the Young Ambassadors on the following weekend so they can all receive their awards together.

Both Katie and Emma work tirelessly for NEEDS(Scotland) as well as for Beat, despite commitments to work and study respectively. Both are involved as supervised “buddies” for the Young Persons’ Department, and both were involved in the organisation of our Celebration Ceilidh last month at Elphinstone Hall. Girls, we salute you! Congratulations! A well deserved award.

Alison and Kris

Thank you Alison and Kris for representing us at the Torcher parade

NEEDS(Scotland) were very proud to have volunteer Alison and her son Kris represent us at the Torcher Parade in Aberdeen on Saturday 28th March. Alison was delighted to do this, as she was very keen to celebrate her daughter’s recovery from an eating disorder. 28th March, 7 years ago, was the day her daughter was admitted to hospital, and the family were obviously very anxious for her. These are her words,

“My daughter and I have both come a long way in seven years. I will carry that torch with

PRIDE for the beautiful young woman my daughter is blossoming into;
BELIEF that with the right treatment, support and understanding these hideous illnesses can be overcome and
HOPE for the future of other young people blighted by eating disorders, that we can help them to turn negatives into positives by using our own personal knowledge and experiences, to offer compassion, understanding and support when they need it most without judgement or criticism.”

On behalf of everyone at NEEDS(Scotland) thank you so much, folks. And, by the way, you look amazing in those fabulous teeshirts!
