"The harder the climb the more the sense of achievement!"

What happens after diagnosis?

The doctor will probably refer you to another professional, such as a specialist dietician or nutritionist, a counsellor, a psychologist, a therapist or a psychiatrist, who will try to help you.

A dietician is some-one who has studied the scientific effects of food and nutrition on the body. They will give advice on how much food your body needs to keep you alive so that you can do all the things you want to. For instance, you need to make energy to keep your heart beating (even when you are fast asleep your body needs energy to keep your heart going!)

A counsellor can help you see the underlying feelings causing your unhappiness and eating distress, and help you find new ways of coping with your feelings.

A psychiatrist has had medical training and then specialised in diagnosing, treating and trying to prevent mental, behavioural and emotional disorders.

There are different kinds of therapists who have had special training to work with people to help them resolve their problems.

Whatever kind of treatment you are offered, it is a two-way process between you and the professional trying to help you, with a lot of hard work in the effort to beat the eating disorder.
